What stays on your device

Everything you create in the app — your trips, the plates you have found, when you found them, and where — is stored locally on your iPhone. If you have iCloud enabled, this data may sync through your own private iCloud account, which only you can access. The developer cannot see it.

Location

If you grant location access, StateSighter records the coordinates where you claimed a plate. This is used for two things: showing you a map of where you spotted each plate, and calculating how far a plate travelled from its home state for scoring.

• Your location is never transmitted off your device.
• Location is read when you claim a plate, and continuously only while you have hands-free mode switched on.
• The app works without location access. Scores are less precise, and the map of your route is unavailable.
• You can revoke location access at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services.

Optional anonymous statistics

StateSighter includes an opt-in setting to contribute anonymous sighting statistics, so the app can eventually show facts like “8% of trips find Hawaii”. This is off unless you turn it on.

If you enable it, each contribution contains only:

• the two-letter code of the place whose plate you found;
• a randomly salted, one-way hash used to group sightings into a trip;
• whether the trip covers the US or the US and Canada;
• the date, rounded to the day.

It never includes your location, trip names, notes, device identifiers, or anything connected to your Apple Account. The trip identifier is a hash, not your real trip ID, so a contributed record cannot be traced back to you. You can turn this off at any time in How to Play.

Game Center

If you sign in to Game Center, your scores are submitted to Apple’s leaderboards so you can compare with friends. That is handled by Apple under Apple’s privacy policy. You can play the whole game without signing in.

Siri

Logging plates by voice uses Apple’s Siri, which processes speech under Apple’s own privacy policy. StateSighter receives only the name of the place you said.

Children

StateSighter is suitable for all ages and collects no personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date.
